With its glossy dark green foliage and dramatic burgundy-red spathes, Anthurium andraeanum ‘Essencia’ is a show-stopping variety of the classic Flamingo Flower. These long-lasting, waxy blooms are often mistaken for real flowers but are actually modified leaves (spathes) surrounding a pale-yellow spadix. A striking tropical houseplant, this epiphytic species blooms on and off throughout the year with the right care. Keep humidity high, avoid soggy roots, and this plant will reward you with rich colour and exotic charm for years to come.
Scientific Name
Anthurium andraeanum (Andre’s flower-tail) ‘Essencia’
Common Name
Flamingo Flower, Flamingo Lily, Painter’s Palette
Origin
Native to tropical areas of Colombia and Ecuador
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light with a splash of morning or evening sun. A north-east or north-west facing windowsill is ideal. Too much direct sun can scorch the leaves.
Water
Water when the top third of the soil has dried out during spring and summer. In cooler months, allow a little more to dry out between waterings. Avoid waterlogging – the roots are sensitive and easily rot.
Humidity
Thrives in high humidity. Mist regularly, group with other plants, or place on a humidity tray – especially helpful in bright, warm spots.
Soil
Use a well-draining, chunky mix with orchid bark or perlite to reflect its epiphytic roots. Repot every 2–3 years, or only when rootbound.
Food
Feed every 2–3 weeks in spring and summer with a gentle, balanced fertiliser. Reduce to monthly in autumn and winter. Avoid feeding dry soil – always pre-water first.
Temperature
Ideal range is 18–26°C. Do not expose to temperatures below 12°C, and avoid cold draughts or sudden temperature drops.
Pet-safe
No – this plant is toxic if ingested, so keep away from pets and young children.
Sprouts Top Tips
Give your plant a short winter rest with slightly cooler temps and reduced feeding – this can trigger better flowering during the warmer months.
Extras
If your Flamingo Flower stops blooming, try increasing humidity or moving it to a brighter spot (but not in direct sunlight). Clean the leaves regularly to help them breathe and shine.
