How To Care

The Common Lilac is easy to care for. This lilac enjoys full sun and is adaptable to variety of soils as long as they are well-drained. Water deeply twice weekly for the first 2-3 months. Once established water when the ground is dry. Fertilize with a slow release fertilizer in spring for best results.

No need to prune this lilac, but if you do, right after spring blooms fade is the time recommended. The flowers bloom on old and new wood. Deadheading old blooms does encourage faster and more plentiful reblooming, but isn’t necessary if you want to avoid the task. Lilacs are deer resistant.

Avoid diseases and pests by providing the ideal environment for your plant to thrive. Not many pests bother this lilac. However watch out for Scale and Borers. Scale is an insect seen on the underside of leaves, stems, and branches. They may look cottony or waxy and move slowly or not at all. These insects are parasitic so they can be a problem if they become abundant. They can be treated with neem oil.

Be sure to thoroughly cover the entire plant and apply multiple doses. If you see holes in the stems of your plant you have Borers. These are generally hard to treat without pruning the plant back as they live inside the plant. However, natural pesticide, Bacillus thuringiensis can be an effective treatment. Avoid fungus issues by watering at the base of your plant rather than over the leaves.

Planting your lilac: Find a nice sunny spot to plant your lilac. Dig a hole 1½ times bigger than the pot. Gently remove the plant from the pot and pull apart the roots a little bit at the bottom and sides. Place your Lilac bush inside the hole, ensuring that the root ball is level with the surrounding surface. Tamp the soil in place to remove any oxygen bubbles and water it thoroughly.

Landscape Ideas

The Common Lilac is fairly large at maturity, about 12 feet tall and about 8 feet wide. This Lilac is great for a unique hedge or even a privacy screen. Plant one as a lovely focal point in your yard or garden. Lilacs are perfect for a cottage, cutting, or wildlife garden. Plant your Lilac somewhere where you pass by often so you can enjoy the fragrance of its blooms.

Cute way to pass the time
Format: Paperback
Thank you to Dial Press Trade Paperback and NetGalley for the ARC of this novel. I thought this was really cute and a fun way to pass the time. I am a fan of Food Network cooking shows so it was a way to see behind the scenes a bit for the reality behind reality TV. The inn itself sounded lovely and seeing Molly and Robin grow apart and then back together was what I wanted from the book. The ending did feel abrupt but for the most part, enjoyable. 3.5 stars.

A roller coaster ride!
Format: Kindle
Such an emotional story but did really enjoy the town this story was based in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Such a peaceful beautiful town. Molly and Robin were married but split up and had lived apart for seven years. They owned the Hummingbird Inn and Molly came back there to stay for a while but realized Robin had moved back in there earlier. I loved the antics that these two played on one another and you could tell they really still loved one another but both had too much baggage. They were going to sell the Inn split the money and get the divorce but then feelings became involved. I received this ARC from Netgalley for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Heartwarming queer love story
Format: Paperback
I LOVED this book. It’s the most refreshing, queer, lesbian, second chance, finding your way back home story. From almost throwing hands to falling back in love, it was a wonderful journey of reflection in both women and their growth as a couple. It reminds me so much of Columbus ohios gay community and just such a supportive and loving city. My ONE complaint would be that I felt the ending was rushed. It was just like “oh hey I still love you, cancel the sale, done”. I would’ve loved a little more of an ending or even an epilogue. I kinda felt… incomplete at the end which made me sad!

Bed and Breakup
Format: Kindle
Bed and Breakup is a dual POV forced-proximity second chance romance. Estranged wives Molly and Robin both return to the Bed and Breakfast they co-own after seven years apart, each needing to recharge creatively and figure out their next steps. Despite not wanting to cohabitate, they reluctantly agree to work together to refurbish the inn so they can sell it and finally break ties with each other for good. Working in close proximity stirs up memories, the good with the bad, leaving both confused about what next steps to take. This was an enjoyable and well written ARC and I will definitely look for more from this author. This book, though, just wasn’t the right fit for me. I really LOVE second-chance romance, but this book was missing two aspects that draw me to them: I didn’t feel like the reason for the initial breakup was all that forgivable and fully resolved, and usually in second-chance romance you have at least one character working towards the end goal of reconciliation established pretty early on. However, I did love the small town, the many side characters, and the passions Molly and Robin had (artistic and culinary). I would definitely recommend this book even though it wasn’t a perfect fit for me.

a second-chance romance with humor, steaminess, friendship, and love.
Format: Kindle
Going back to where you felt safe and loved to close that chapter and then finding your ex there is beyond complicated. Both Robin and Molly go back to Eureka Springs for reasons other than personal as they both happen to be there for professional reasons too. This makes leaving almost impossible. An opportunity to close their chapter, with some cash too, sends them spiraling towards confrontations, pranks, and some hanky panky. I enjoyed Bed and Breakup. After reading Susie Dumond’s afterword, it was nice knowing that a place like Eureka Springs actually exists. Where people can exist in harmony and be celebrated for who they are - everyone. The banter is fun even when there is a trace of anger and pain. I think because you know this is a romance and nowadays, they usually come with a happy ending, you know this too shall pass. Dumond does make you rethink a prank though. Holy sugar. I will confess that the first one would give me the heebie-jeebies too. The chemistry is good, and the details are in even better 😆. I think it does kind of suck that they were both with other partners while still being married, but I guess that’s real life. It’s just weird to be thinking in the middle of things, “oh that’s new, she must have learned that while boinking someone else.” It kind of brings an ick factor into it. There is something missing for me on Robin’s side. We get to see Molly’s reaction all of the time to Robin’s cooking and artistry in the kitchen. Robin sees Molly’s work once. We never see her walking down the street after the installation of the three storefronts that Molly did and have her admire them or be in awe. Molly researched Robin’s restaurants and talked to her artist to artist. Robin didn’t even bother. She just wanted her to work on the inn even when things were going well for them. It felt like she never really respected Molly’s artistry. Where was the caring when Molly sliced up her hands trying to get the jimmies just right on the donuts in the window? I don’t know, it just seemed very one sided. I love the diverse secondary cast. I love Key and how she is represented in this book. She checks everyone all of the time and reminds them that she is a proud Black woman. She’s striving to make the town stronger and for businesses to grow for her community. I love this. I hope Dumond goes back to Eureka and writes Key’s love story. She’s feisty, loyal, artistic, and strong. I adore her. Heck, I’d date her. Bed and Breakup is a second-chance romance with humor, steaminess, friendship, and love. I loved escaping to Eureka Springs. Add this one to your beach bag for a good time.
