Pilea libanensis 'Greyzy' ('Silver Sparkles')

Pilea libanensis 'Greyzy' ('Silver Sparkles') has tiny silver-grey leaves on slim reddish stems. Its fine trailing growth can creep across the substrate surface or spill over the edge of a small pot.

The plant stays delicate in scale, so small changes in moisture show quickly on the stems and leaves. Bright indirect light, steady warmth and careful watering keep the fine growth from drying hard or sitting in stale wet substrate.

Tiny silver leaves on Pilea libanensis 'Greyzy' ('Silver Sparkles')

  • Leaf size: Very small rounded leaves create a dense, fine-textured surface.
  • Leaf colour: The foliage has a silver-grey to glaucous tone.
  • Stem colour: Fine pink-red to reddish stems add contrast beneath the tiny leaves.
  • Growth habit: Creeping, trailing or cascading stems can cover the substrate surface or hang from a small pot.
  • Growing format: The plant can be grown in terrariums, humid vitrines and hanging containers with good airflow.

Fine trailing growth in Pilea libanensis 'Greyzy' ('Silver Sparkles')

This Pilea grows with slim stems and very small leaves, so it reacts faster to drying than thicker-leaved houseplants. A pot that dries evenly, a light substrate and regular moisture checks are more important than a fixed watering schedule.

In a humid setup, the plant can fill space with a mat of silver-grey foliage. In open indoor air, it needs closer attention to drying edges and stem collapse, especially during warm weather or near strong light.

Care guide for Pilea libanensis 'Greyzy' ('Silver Sparkles')

  • Light: Give bright indirect light. Strong direct sun can scorch the tiny leaves, while low light can make the stems thin and sparse.
  • Watering: Keep the substrate lightly and evenly moist, then let the upper layer begin to dry before watering again.
  • Humidity: Higher humidity keeps the fine leaves from drying too quickly, especially in terrariums or vitrines.
  • Temperature: Keep it warm and stable. Cold wet conditions can lead to stem and root problems.
  • Substrate: Use a fine, airy mix that holds some moisture but drains quickly after watering.
  • Pruning: Trim long stems to keep the plant dense and to encourage fresh side growth.
  • Propagation: Stem cuttings root readily when kept warm, humid and lightly moist.

Common issues with Pilea libanensis 'Greyzy' ('Silver Sparkles')

  • Crispy foliage: Usually points to drying too far, low humidity or light that is too intense.
  • Stem collapse: Often linked to waterlogged substrate or cold wet roots.
  • Thin growth: A sign that the plant needs brighter filtered light.
  • Brown stem tips: Can appear when the fine growth dries between waterings.
  • Pests: Check dense stems for spider mites, mealybugs and fungus gnats.

Safety for Pilea libanensis 'Greyzy' ('Silver Sparkles')

Pilea are generally considered non-toxic houseplants. Even so, pets that chew fine stems or leaves may get mild stomach irritation, so place the plant away from animals that regularly chew houseplants.

Hardy the poet
Format: Paperback
We all know Hardy the novelist, but perhaps he is less well known as a poet. In this volume of over 900 pages, with nearly 1,000 poems, Hardy is colorful, chatty, direct, lyrical, thoughtful, deep. And perhaps his finest quality - at least so I find - is the fact that he is down-to-earth. His poems are not "difficult" for a reasonably literate, experienced reader; and the rhyming is never forced. In short, his poems are a delight.

The other side of one of the giants of the Victorian era.
Format: Paperback
Thomas Hardy is my favorite novelist who has ever lived. I preface the review of this poetry anthology - which includes every one of the 900+ poems he wrote throughout his life, from the 1860s to just before his death in 1928 - in this way because I’m a bit biased. Hardy’s poetry is technically satisfying and nearly as moving as his novels, and you can tell that the same precision he brought to prose is on full display in his verse. I’m working my way through every single poem in this collection, and thus far my favorites are “The Convergence of the Twain” and “After the Last Breath.” There are other poets whose works I like better (Dickinson, Yeats, Wordsworth, and Whitman come to mind), but as an amateur Hardy scholar, reading this collection is positively invaluable to understand the full depth of his genius, and as always Wordsworth Classics delivers in terms of a quality paperback that should withstand years of enjoyment. I own many of their releases and have yet to find one that even slightly disappoints.
