The Philodendron subhastatum variegata 'BALLEROY VAR' is a rare and striking variety within the Philodendron-family. What makes this plant special is the unique combination of variety and the typical color change between the top and bottom of the leaves - a rarity among tropical houseplants.
Origin
This cultivar is derived from the natural Philodendron subhastatum, a species native to the rain forests of South America. The 'BALLEROY VAR' is a cultivated form in which spontaneous or selectively stimulated variety was stabilized, resulting in a visually spectacular plant.
Characteristics
The 'BALLEROY VAR' has large, oblong leaves with a rich dark green upper surface, often punctuated by cream to yellowish-white spots or marble-like patterns. The underside of the leaves is strikingly reddish, providing a subtle color contrast with each movement of the leaf. This combination of two-tone leaf surfaces as well as variegated patterns makes this plant exceptionally decorative.
The growth habit is semi-climbing, with sturdy stems that could use support as the plant ages. Because of its rarity and ornamental value, this cultivar is loved by collectors.
Care
The Philodendron subhastatum variegata 'BALLEROY VAR' requires a location with bright, indirect light - too much direct sunlight can burn the variegated parts, while too little light can reduce variety. An airy potting soil with good drainage is essential; avoid wet feet.
In terms of humidity, this plant feels best with higher humidity (60% or more), although it can also ground well in average indoor climates provided conditions remain stable. Water as soon as the top layer of potting soil has dried slightly. Add a light houseplant food monthly during the growing period.
